World Environment Day is being observed worldwide today as a global initiative led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to raise awareness of the importance of nature conservation and sustainable development.
This year’s theme, “Inspired by Nature. For the Climate. For Our Future,” highlights the need for collective action in addressing numerous challenges, including climate change, environmental pollution, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation.
On the occasion of this observance, the Institute for Standardization of Serbia emphasizes the importance of implementing international standards that help organizations systematically manage their environmental impact.
Among these, a particularly significant place is held by SRPS EN ISO 14001:2026_, Environmental Management Systems, Requirements with Guidance for Use_, published by Commission A207 on 29 May 2026. This edition supersedes and withdraws SRPS ISO 14001:2015.
SRPS EN ISO 14001:2026 specifies requirements for an environmental management system that enables organizations to systematically manage their environmental responsibilities at a high level. Its implementation allows organizations to improve environmental performance, fulfil compliance obligations, and achieve established environmental objectives.
The particular value of the new edition lies in its ability to transform environmental goals into tangible results. Organizations implementing the standard are better equipped to address challenges such as emissions management, waste management, and resource conservation, while integrating these activities into their day-to-day operations. This important document and World Environment Day share a common and urgent objective: moving from declarative environmental commitments to measurable and concrete results in the fight against climate change.
World Environment Day serves as a reminder that responsible resource management, the implementation of modern standards, and the continuous improvement of environmental protection practices are essential prerequisites for a sustainable future and the preservation of natural resources for future generations. The application of standards can play a significant role in achieving these objectives.
